Description

A striking poster design for Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey". The poster dates from 1973, this being the first release of the film in Poland. Like many Polish cinema posters of the period, an avant garde approach has been taken. The artist, Wiktor Gorka was regarded as one of Polands's foremost poster artists (travel, educational as well as cinema posters) & also undertook commissions for various book & magazine cover designs. Later in his career, Gorka developed close links with Mexico, both lecturing there & designing posters for the Mexican market. Apart from "2001", Gorka's poster design for "Cabaret", is perhaps best known & recognised outside Poland (shown here for reference courtesy of www.moviepostermem.com).

The British Quad poster (A-style) for "2001" is based on the artwork of the American artist Bob McCall. As can be seen (poster shown courtesy of www.moviepostermem.com), the western approach to the poster illustration was far more literal. The contrast with Gorka's work is even more stark.
