Description
A superlative poster design that would have made a real impact in 1964. The film tells the tale of a raid by 633 Squadron's Mosquito bombers on a heavy-water plant hidden away in the Norwegian fjords by the Germans. The film featured a stirring Ron Goodwin score & some excellent aerial photography. The poster design is uncompromising, the bright colours & dramatic action, providing an arresting image. The artist for this poster is uncertain, though the artwork here does closely resemble that on the American 1-Sheet (this credited to a Donald E Smith?). Interestingly, the US poster design removes the RAF insignia from the planes, the anonymous look presumably being more effective from a marketing point of view with American audiences. Cliff Robertson was an accomplished pilot & apparently was so impressed with the Mosquito that he tried to buy one after filming. This proved impossible so he purchased a Spitfire instead. The poster has been professionally cleaned, de-acidified & linen-backed.
