Description

Maurice Micklewhite (aka Michael Caine) was on a roll by the time "Alfie" broke onto the big screen, having already triumphed in "Zulu" (1964) & "The Ipcress File" (1965). "Alfie", however, really captured the zeitgeist, the story of an arrogant, self-centred womaniser leaving a stream of broken hearts in his wake, set against the backdrop of "swinging London". Director Lewis Gilbert, employed an interesting technique in having Caine turn to address the audience directly at various points in the film. The "Alfie" role certainly stretched Caine's acting abilities, rewarding him with a richly desrved Oscar nomination (his first). The film is, however, perhaps best remembered for the Bacharach-David title track "Alfie". The soundtrack version was by Millicent Martin but both Cilla Black (in the UK) & Cher (in the States) had huge hits with their cover versions too.

The poster is an interesting composition with a photograph of Caine being superimposed as the dot on the "i" in the title. Images of Alfie's various female conquests have been incorporated into the rest of the title text & graffiti type "Alfie is..." slogans also adorn the red title script. A simple but effective poster design & one of the quintessential 1960's British posters. Interestingly, the American poster for the film shared the same concept as the Quad design minus the graffiti slogans, preferring instead to plaster the poster with critical plaudits (image courtesy of emovieposter.com).
