Description
Posters for Tarantino films are generally as idiosyncratic as the films themselves & this "Death Proof" Quad is no exception. A simple design: a girl, a car & a blood red slash across a bare white background. The imagery is stark but expressive, giving potential viewers a good idea as to the essential ingredients of the film. The contrast between the Quad & the US 1-Sheet for the film is interesting. In the USA, "Death Proof" was twinned with Robert Rodriquez's "Planet Terror". Both films played homage to historic genres (in the case of "Death Proof" to exploitation & "slasher" films of the 1970's, "Planet Terror" leaning more towards the genre of B-movie Sci-fi films). Both films therefore fit within the American tradition of "Grindhouse" (exploitation) films & they were consciously marketed as such. The US 1-Sheet poster design is made to look retro with stains & surface marks built into the illustration. This fake ageing of the poster was a technique also used for Tarantino's "Pulp Fiction" (1994). As foreign audiences were not familiar with the "Grindhouse" tradition, the films were released separately abroad. NB. The two US 1-Sheet images courtesy of www.emovieposter.com.
