Description

The full name of this Spielberg classic was "E.T. : the Extra-Terrestial". Released in 1982, this story of an child befriending an alien stranded on earth proved to be both a commmercial & critical success, being nominated for 9 Oscars & winning 4. The poster design was crafted by the American artist John Alvin. Alvin's simple image of alien & human hands stretching out towards each other, encapsulated the essential "feel good" sensibilities of the film. Another good example of "less being more" in terms of poster design.

During his carrer, Alvin was responsible for approximately 140 film posters, his first being that for the Mel Brooks comedy "Blazing Saddles" (1974). Apart from "ET", Alvin was also responsible for another "modern" Scifi classic: "Blade Runner" (1982) (images courtesy of emovieposter.com). The contrast between the simplicity of "ET" & the busier imagery on "Blade Runner", points to Alvin's versatility as an artist & designer.
