Description
Michael Caine was to appear as "Harry Palmer" in all 3 of the Cold War Thrillers based on Len Deighton's novels ("Ipcress File" 1965, "Funeral In Berlin" 1966 & "Billion Dollar Brain" 1967). The "Harry Palmer" character was set up deliberately in juxtaposition to the more glamourous figure of "James Bond": where Bond was well dressed, uber-confident & charismatic, Palmer was nondescript, almost anonymous & wore glasses. The more realistic approach, however, worked perfectly well & the trilogy of "Harry Palmer" films were all commercial hits. The poster design here was also very different to contemporary Bonds, the artwork having a contempoary Pop-Art sensibility (somewhat similar in style to Putzu's artwork for "Get Carter" (1971). Artist, John Burningham was better known for his work on book cover designs (see Sim Branaghan's "British Film Posters" book 2006) & for his poster designs for London Transport but this is an interesting example of his cinema poster work. The poster has been cleaned, de-acidified & linen-backed.
