Description
A truly iconic poster for this quintessentially gritty English film. A number of Italian poster artists illustrated posters for British films during the 1950’s-70’s. Some remained Italian based handling ad hoc commissions but several including Renato Fratini & Arnaldo Putzu, moved to London (both working under Eric Pulford at the Downton Advertising Agency. The “Get Carter” Poster is by Putzu & provides an incongruous image of Michael Caine bedecked in an improbably floral suit. Whilst the design (by Eddie Paul) resonated with the tail-end of the psychedelic era, it seems likely as Sim Branaghan suggests in "British Film Posters" (2006), that the flower-power element was introduced as "an ironic comment on the film's unremittingly bleak violence". The poster has been cleaned, de-acidified & linen-backed.
