Description

One of the quintessential motor racing film posters for collectors remains “Le Mans” starring Steve McQueen. An action-packed film hoping to capitalise on the success of 1966’s “Grand Prix”, “Le Mans” featured real footage from the actual 24 Hours of Le Mans auto race of 1970. The focus was very much on the race itself and despite McQueen’s presence featured minimal dialogue. Though subsequently revered by auto & McQueen fans alike, the film was not a huge success, particularly in America where the mystique of the Le Mans race was less well-known.

The Italian Two-Panel poster shown here makes sure to promote the film through its two best assets: McQueen and the cars of the Le Mans race. Presenting iconic McQueen imagery amidst a backdrop of the swirling colours of the French flag with the race-cars below, the design is more literal than many of its alternatives used elsewhere. By contrast Tom Jung’s designs used in the British and American posters for the film, present a more impressionistic representation (images courtesy of www.moviepostermem).

The poster featured here is already linen-backed and framed.
