Description
An iconic image of The Who from this 1979 documentary film about the band. The image was taken from a shot from the photographer Art Kane. Knowing The Who's penchant for incorporating the Union Jack into their clothing, Kane had two flags sewn together & had this draped over the band. The significance of the band being shown asleep has been debated. One theory is that it would highlight the raucous reputation of the band, the allusion being that the band were wrecked after a hard night carousing. Another interpretation is that Kane was mimicking a famous photograph by Cartier-Bresson of a man asleep in a pile of newspapers in Trafalgar Square during the Coronation of George VI, 12th May 1937. Kane took his photo of The Who at the Carl Schurz Monument, close to Columbia University, New York.
