Description
Such was the quality of Richard Amsel's illustration for the US poster campaign for "The Sting", that it was used in the UK campaign too. The imagery conjures up a sense of Depression era America, a time when sharp operators lived on their wits. The obvious camaraderie between Robert Redford & Paul Newman in the film is also captured on the poster by Amsel (Redford & Newman had collaborated with Director George Roy Hill 4 years earlier, with great success on "Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid"). Amsel (1947-85) enjoyed a brief career only before his untimely demise. During his career, however, he contributed to the canon of American poster designs, ranging between films such as "Hello Dolly" & "Raiders of the Lost Ark" & illustrating LP & Magazine covers too (Amsel's artwork of Lily Tomlin for Time Magazine now resides in the Smithsonian Institute). This poster has been cleaned, de-acidified & linen-backed.
