Description
A fabulous illustration by the artist Frank Langford for this film spin-off from the cult TV series "The Sweeney". The TV series ran from 1975-78 & was repeated frequently in the early 1980's. Jack Regan (played by John Thaw) & George Carter (Dennis Waterman) & their trademark quips  ("Get your trousers on....you're nicked!") became common currency with the British viewing public. The series presented a much grittier vision of policing than programmes like "Z Cars" (1962-78). In a sense, "The Sweeney" picked up on the growing movement towards realism in the cinema ("Get Carter" et al). The film version also allowed the production team to increase elements of sex & violence that would not have been acceptable on TV at the time. Frank Langford is perhaps better known as a comic artist having worked on titles such as "Eagle" in the 1950's & 1960's but in the 1970's he illustrated a number of film posters, particularly for EMI (for more information see Sim Branaghan's "British Film posters" book). "The Sweeney" is Langford's most memorable contribution to the canon of British cinema posters. This example has been cleaned, de-acidified & linen-backed.
