Description

“Un Homme et une Femme”, (English title: “A Man and a Woman”) was a significant success when released in 1966, triumphing at the box office internationally, winning the prestigious Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and also being presented with the Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Writing. The film, which details the budding romance between a young widow and widower, is synonymous with the expressiveness and stylism of the French New Wave, particularly with its inventive use of colour in its photography.

This quality of the film certainly comes across in the film’s French poster which includes snippet-like still shots from the film, arranged in a typically ‘cool’ fashion often associated with French cinema. This is an interesting technique which also allows the poster to convey the many different themes and qualities of the film, such as its passionate story as well as making sure to display the Brabham Ford F3, one of the many race cars that are featured in “Un Homme at une Femme”.

The US 1-Sheet poster (image courtesy of www.moviepostermem.com) removes the stills yet still portrays the film’s artistic and experimental aesthetics through the distorted appearance of the central image of the couple embracing. Interestingly this type of design was also used in France in an alternative poster composition (image courtesy of emovieposter.com) that again clearly highlights the romantic and artistic credentials of the film.
