Description
A scarce poster & therefore a rare case where we have compromised on condition a little. The design using the technique of incorporating the film title into the artwork on the poster (see also Chantrell's Poster for "She"), the patterns conjuring images of Africa immediately. The film tells the story of the battle of Rorke's Drift 1879, where a band of 139 British troops (a mixture of Royal Engineers & the 24th Foot - South Wales Borderers) defended an outpost against an army of 4,500 Zulu warriors. The battle was most notable for the record award of 11 VC's & became symbolic of British resolve & heroism. For Brits of a certain age, this film has achieved iconic status, John Barry's stirring soundtrack immediately transporting us back to Natal. "Zulu" was the film to catapult Michael Caine to stardom. Cast somewhat against type as the upper class Lt. Gonville Bromhead, London eastender Michael Caine, presented a masterclass of British reserve. Subsequently asked about how he was able to acquire the air of upper class superiority, Caine replied that it was easy when seated on a horse looking down upon others! For a plethora of further information about the film, please see Sheldon Hall's "Zulu: With Some Guts Behind It, The Making Of The Epic Movie" (2006). This is one of THE classic collectable British War genre posters. The poster has been cleaned, de-acidified & linen-backed.
